Biography

Maureen is the Managing Partner of Whelton Hiutin LLP. She is a leading commercial and civil litigator widely recognized for her forceful advocacy, strategic thinking and proven record of achieving excellent real-world results. A true barrister, Maureen’s practice areas include commercial disputes, real estate and construction disputes, oppression remedy claims, employment law, medical malpractice and appellate advocacy.

Maureen appears regularly before all levels of court in Ontario as well as administrative tribunals and private arbitration panels. She has notable experience in injunction proceedings and has been appointed by the Superior Court of Justice as an independent supervising solicitor in respect of injunctive relief granted by the court. Her experience has also led to her being retained by her peers as a mediator.

Maureen is a leader in the profession and is committed to teaching and to the development of young advocates. For many years Maureen coached the University of Toronto’s Jessup Moot Team, where she supported teams who achieved both national and international success. Her contributions were recognized through her receipt of the Arbor Award in 2018. She is an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto Law School and a regular contributor to the continuing education programs of the Law Society of Ontario and the Ontario Bar Association. She is an active member of the Advocates’ Society and was previously a Director on its board.

Maureen is a graduate of the University of Toronto Law School and St. Francis Xavier University, where she was the valedictorian.
